In 1970, after playing bass in school bands and pursuing a short-lived university course in electronics, Mick Glossop began his adventures in the music industry within the maintenance workshop at Wessex Studios in North London, acquiring technical experience in studio maintenance and audio circuit design. After a short time, he was thrown in at the deep end one evening, when an assistant engineer fell sick.
From there Mick’s first experiences in the studio led to him working with some of the biggest names in music at the time including The Moody Blues, Georgie Fame, Alan Price, Stevie Wonder and numerous live orchestral sessions. When an offer too good to refuse came through, Mick spent some time abroad in a totally different scene in Montreal, Canada – returning to the UK in 1974.
In 1975, after a chance meeting with Philip Newell, a contact from his early days, Mick was offered the job of chief recording engineer at Virgin Records residential recording studio in Oxfordshire, known as The Manor. This opportunity brought him into contact with many international recording artists and led to his future work with Frank Zappa and Van Morrison – a partnership that still exists to this day.
Mick spent some time in the 1980s working with several punk bands as well as the then emerging new wave scene this period marked the continuation of a substantial career in recording and music production, and was highlighted by the success of many projects including an incredible 17 albums with Van Morrison, “Joe’s Garage” by Frank Zappa, four albums with Lloyd Cole, “Magic” by Ian Gillan, “Making Contact” by UFO, “The Whole Of The Moon” & “This Is The Sea” by The Waterboys, “Never Loved Elvis” & “The Size Of A Cow” by The Wonder Stuff, number 1 hit single, “Dizzy” by Vic Reeves and The Wonder Stuff, and “The Happy Club” by Bob Geldof.
Since then, Mick Glossop has worked on projects all over the world including most of Europe, Canada and the Far East. Whilst most of his work has encompassed the analogue domain, in particular at the pinnacle years of analogue recording technology, Mick has maintained a personal endeavor to stay abreast of the latest advancements in digital technology as well and has embraced the ProTools system of recording for the past 12 years.
This has culminated in the construction of his personal production studio, designed by the team at Munro Acoustics, which has an enviable reputation for designing some of the best studios in the world covering the entire gamut of entertainment, including music, film, television and radio.
A developing interest in film sound has more recently led to his involvement in many projects involving sound design and film post-production; one of the most prominent being the role of music editor and music mixer for the “The 51st State” starring Samuel L. Jackson & Robert Carlyle. Further film work has included sound design and mixing for several independent films.
